This website is inspired by Matthäus Merian’s engraving for what is said to be the “Basilica Philosophica” section of Johann Daniel Mylius’s 1618 treatise titled Opus Medico-Chymicum.
I was initially drawn to this image for its esoteric symbolism. Upon further research, I was delighted to learn how its true message directly correlates to my career as a multimedia artist. If you would like to find out more about the symbols and characters, please continue reading below.
This inspirational image has made its way through four centuries of media. It began as a copperplate engraving, was applied to paper by a printing press, converted to a digital color bitmap, and finally appeared as my own vector art reproduction. View the full-resolution SVG (~3.7MB).
We can see the “Basilica Philosophica” image represents the joining of two worlds through what might be called “process and procedure” in today’s professional terminology. Both provide clear definitions, named assets and technical instructions with the intention of predictable transformation and results. They express the belief that commitment to learning from experimentation will achieve growth and progress.
